Personal Branding ~ CV Videos

The term "branding" has long been relegated to companies, but today almost every individual has a personal brand. Not many of us have consciously cultivated these brands, but they exist nonetheless. A digital footprint in the sands of time and space creates a story about you . . . but it is the purposeful self-packaging of your uniqueness as a media version to add to the paper resumes and CV's to deliver WHAT YOU bring to the table beyond credentials, resume or vita that will let you standout by shining your uniqueness of personal values, passions, talents and strengths as a way to differentiate yourself from the competition [colleges - jobs - internships - grants - scholarships - and other competitive opportunities]?

Cyrus Carter, faculty at Robert's College HS in Istanbul Turkey, took the challenge of inventing a new genre of CV for his seniors by mashing up I-imagine and Personal Branding as his online project for Bernajean's Applied StoryTelling Course. I had the special delight of being onsite in Istanbul this past spring and invited to be part of introducing the concept, shaping this new genre, reflecting and learning with Dr. Carter and his students.

It was humbling to experience the journey of students shaping unique personal branding videos - discovering their strengths, values and special talents into a media-based product that emphasized "showing NOT telling" that included the challenge of choosing tools and digital creativity that reflected their personal message.

The Task - creatively "pitch" their personal attributes as a media-based video to be posted on their CV website. Dr. Carter's leadership created a safe community, authentic task and continuous encouragement for students who had thus far been identifying themselves with ONLY school grades, activities, awards and successes.

Look out world . . . here they come!
